Writers FAQ - Letter(s) of Recommendation

Are letter(s) of recommendation mandatory? 

No.  Letter(s) of recommendation from entertainment industry professionals are strongly encouraged, but not required.

Is there a preferred format for letter(s) of recommendation?

Letter(s) of recommendation must be on business or personal letterhead and dated in the current calendar year.  It is recommended that those signing recommendation letter(s) include either a title and/or a brief introduction indicating their position in the entertainment industry.

How many letter(s) of recommendation can I submit?

A maximum of two (2) letter(s) of recommendation may accompany each submission.

How should I submit recommendation letter(s)? 

Recommendation letter(s) must be submitted online with the application.  Recommendation letter(s) emailed or mailed to the Program separate from the writer’s application will not be considered.  The letter(s) should be uploaded as a PDF onto page 8. of the Writers Program Application with the filename(s) titled as follows: Recommendation 1 - First Name Last Name.

How is “industry is professional” defined? 

Industry professionals are persons who currently or previously worked in entertainment media (e.g., film, television, digital and streaming services, etc.).  Positions within both film and television industries include studio, production company, and network executives, writers/producers, feature film and episodic directors, and educators (e.g., professors or writing instructors) who have entertainment industry experience and/or produced credits.

May I submit letter(s) of recommendation from my literary representatives?

No.  Letter(s) from agents, managers, attorneys, etc. are considered a conflict of interest.

To whom should letter(s) of recommendation be addressed?

Letter(s) of recommendation may be addressed to “Universal Writers Program” or “To Whom It May Concern.”
