Universal Animation Writers Program FAQ - General

What is the Universal Animation Writers Program?

Under the umbrella of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group (UFEG), the program will develop writers in feature and television animation through writing assignments as well as internal and external workshops designed to strengthen writing, increase awareness of the animation production process and establish a network of champions to drive career momentum.

What is the goal of the Program?

To identify talent on the cusp of breaking into animation writing for potential feature film and television development as well as staffing opportunities for UFEG content.

Will writers be compensated?

Yes.  If selected, writers will be compensated at a non-negotiable $75,000.00 annualized amount.

What is the Program’s time commitment?

Writers selected to participate in the one-year paid program are hired under a writing service agreement requiring an exclusive, full-time commitment of a minimum of 40 hours per week.

May writers hold other forms of employment or be enrolled in school in concurrence to the Program?

No.  If selected for the program, participants are exclusive to UFEG and cannot hold another form of employment that is in conflict with the program and/or UFEG.

What are the application requirements?

In addition to completing a Universal Animation Writers Program Application, material submission release form, current résumé, and personal essay, applicants are required to submit the following material

  • Feature Animation: An original live-action or animation screenplay and treatment not based on the submitted screenplay.
  • TV Animation:  A live action or animated original pilot and spec script from one of the two tracks offered.

Letters of recommendation are optional but not required.  Please review the FAQs for additional information regarding letters of recommendation.

Can I email, hand deliver or mail my application and material? 

No.  Only online applications will be accepted.  Applicants who are unable to upload their application online may contact us for further information.

When will the Program begin? 

The one-year Program launches in June of the following year

How many writers are selected each year?

The number of writers selected can vary from year to year.

If selected for the Program, what types of writing assignments will I receive?

  • Features: Selected writers will be required to complete two feature-length scripts based on selected story areas designated by DreamWorks Animation Film.
  • TV: Selected writers will be considered for staffing on series produced by UFEG business units.  Writers will also have the opportunity to develop original concepts for potential development consideration

If selected for the Kids 6-11 or Preschool 3-5 track of the Program, will I be guaranteed a staff writer position?

No. Program staffing is not guaranteed.

If selected for the Program, will I be guaranteed that my material will be developed and/or produced?  

No. Concept development is not guaranteed

Where is the Program located? 

Universal Studios Lot in, Universal City, CA. You must reside in Los Angeles to participate in the program.

If I’m selected as a finalist to participate in the in-person interview, will UFEG reimburse my traveling expenses?

No.

If I’m selected into the Program but do not live in Los Angeles, will UFEG reimburse my relocation costs?

No.

May writers participate in the Program remotely from other locations?

No.

Is there an East Coast version of the Program?

No.

How do I know my submission has been received?

An on-screen message will appear verifying confirmation.  If the message does not appear, the application is incomplete and must be resubmitted.

Will you personally contact me about the status of my application?
